Boat Insurance

Boat insurance for Ohio's lakes and waterways

Coverage built for the way you actually boat

Whether you keep a pontoon at Apple Valley Lake, fish a bass boat on Knox Lake, or trailer a ski boat across Ohio every summer, your boat is more than a toy — it's a real investment. A homeowners policy will not cover it, and Ohio's general liability rules don't end when you push off the dock.

DePolo & Associates writes boat policies that match how you actually use the boat: where it's stored, who drives it, what's bolted on, and where you tow it. We'll walk you through hull value, liability limits, and on-water towing so the policy fits the boat — not the other way around.

What boat insurance covers

A standard boat policy protects the hull, motor, and trailer; liability for injuries or damage you cause on the water; medical payments for passengers; and your personal property on board. Optional add-ons like on-water towing, fuel-spill liability, and agreed-value coverage close the gaps that surprise boat owners after a loss.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat?
Only in very limited ways. Most homeowners policies cover small boats (typically under 25 horsepower) while stored on your property — and that's it. Anything bigger, anything in the water, and any real liability claim needs a dedicated boat policy.
Do I need boat insurance in Ohio?
Ohio does not require boat insurance by state law, but most marinas, slip rentals, and lenders do require proof of liability coverage. Even where it's optional, it's almost always worth carrying — a single accident on a busy summer weekend can far exceed the value of the boat.
What's the difference between actual cash value and agreed value?
Actual cash value pays out the depreciated value of your boat at the time of a total loss. Agreed value pays the dollar amount you and the carrier set up front, no depreciation applied. Agreed value costs a little more but pays meaningfully better on older or upgraded boats.
Is my trailer covered when I'm towing the boat?
Yes — most boat policies cover the trailer itself for damage and theft. The liability portion of your auto policy generally covers damage your trailer causes to others while it's hooked up and towed on the road. We make sure both policies actually line up so there's no gap.
